Inspired by my own family dog, Cadi, the Spleen Screen is a fast, non-invasive ultrasound screening offered at dog events to assess the appearance of your dog’s spleen. Cadi was 10 years old with no symptoms and normal bloodwork when I decided to scan her spleen—just to be safe. That simple scan revealed changes that led to further evaluation and the removal of her spleen by a specialist. Today, she’s happy and thriving. That experience showed me just how powerful proactive imaging can be.
In a healthy dog, the spleen should have a smooth, uniform echotexture on ultrasound. Over time, changes in the spleen can occur—some are benign, like nodules or hyperplasia, while others may signal more serious conditions. The goal of the Spleen Screen is to catch these changes early, before any outward symptoms appear.
Using portable ultrasound equipment, we’ll use sound waves to gently scan your dog’s spleen and provide you with images from the screening. This is a quick and safe process that many dogs tolerate very well, especially in a calm setting.
As a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) with years of experience in both human and veterinary ultrasound, my passion is to provide high-quality ultrasound imaging and compassionate care for my patients. My unique background gives me the expertise to perform accurate and gentle screenings for dogs in community and clinical settings.
This is a screening, not a diagnosis. No medical conclusions or treatment recommendations will be made during the event. You will receive the ultrasound images of your dog’s spleen, which you can share with your regular veterinarian for further evaluation or follow-up if needed.
A signed release form located (here) is required for each dog prior to screening.
The best time to check is before there’s a problem.
We will be offering the Spleen Screen service at events listed below in the near future. Stop by and give your dog the gift of early insight with the Spleen Screen.
